How to use question banks without memorising traps

  • After each timed block, list three questions you got wrong because of wording — not arithmetic slips.
  • Rewrite the stem in plain English (“they meant track, not heading”) before reading the explanation.
  • Revisit the same trap 48 hours later with fresh questions; recognition should become automatic.
  • Pair Met and Nav blocks — many weather questions assume you already plotted a realistic route.

Air Law: “VFR in Class D needs a clearance, so Class E must need one too.”

Why it trips people

Both classes are controlled, but the service and separation rules differ. Exams love swapping “clearance” and “separation”.

Read the question this way

Ask: did ATC issue a clearance to enter, and who separates whom? Class D clears VFR and separates from IFR. Class E does not clear VFR — you enter when equipped and compliant; IFR separation from IFR still applies.

Common Mistake

Class D = clearance for VFR. Class E = no VFR clearance, but you still obey VFR minima and procedures.

Air Law — airspace classification

Navigation: Using heading when the question means track (or vice versa).

Why it trips people

In zero wind they are the same, so calculators and briefings blur the words. Exam diagrams almost always include wind.

Read the question this way

Heading is where the nose points. Track is where you move over the ground. Wind drift is the angle between them.

Underline “track” and “heading” in the stem before you touch the flight computer.

Navigation: Applying variation and deviation in the wrong direction.

East/west mnemonics fight with “add west” habits from school maths.

Use TVMDC in order: True → Variation → Magnetic → Deviation → Compass when going from chart to cockpit.

Common Mistake

Write TVMDC once on scrap paper; only then convert the value the question actually asks for (often magnetic, not compass).

Navigation — variation and deviation

Meteorology: Mixing warm-front and cold-front cloud sequences.

Why it trips people

Both fronts bring cloud, but warm fronts give a long, gradual approach signature; cold fronts hit faster.

Warm: high cirrus → thickening lower layers over hours. Cold: sharp line, cumuliform, showers, possible CB behind.

Sketch a timeline arrow before picking answer options — order matters more than cloud names alone.

Meteorology: Treating a METAR as if it forecasts the whole flight.

If the question says “plan a flight in three hours”, reach for TAF or PROB/TEMPO groups — not METAR alone.

Meteorology / FP&P: Ignoring PROB30 because it “probably will not happen”.

Probability sounds optional; legally you still need fuel, alternates, or a defensible plan when the question ties PROB to minima.

PROB30 means a real chance — plan as if you may have to use the worse conditions unless the question explicitly allows ignoring them.

When PROB appears, check alternates, fuel endurance, and whether VFR minima still work in the TEMPO window.

Meteorology — TAF groups

Navigation: Flying the CDI without checking the TO/FROM flag.

Why it trips people

Needle-centring feels universal; FROM the station reverses intercept sense.

TO = homing in on the station along the selected radial. FROM = tracking away. Flag flip near the station is normal (cone of confusion).
